Who are you?
My name is Alice Law and I'm a stress management consultant, speaker and writer come and ask me a question about stress management.
Who are you and what is your background?
I'm Anna Store and I'm a stress management consultant. I got into stress management having had a very stressful time in my own life with my family, having lost my half sister to cancer, having my dad become depressed and very ill as well himself from stress getting rediagnosed with cancer himself and not wanting to deal with it. Having financial troubles as our family, putting his business into administration, selling our family home, becoming redundant, having a breakup, having a health scare myself, and then finally losing my own father to stress related illness. From this time, I started to really work with stress for myself to be able to cope because I realised that everything that was going on in my life I had no control over. So the one thing I could control is how I responded and reacted. So I started learning things like mindfulness and stress management, meditation, energy practises, studying how stress worked in the body, putting it all together to look at how I could make stress not a part of my life, and it really started to help. Then when I became redundant, I decided actually this is what I should do for a living. So I started training things like mindfulness and meditation, energy work, mindset work, putting together my own programmes to become a stress management consultant, and then to go on to write a book on stress and also have a podcast based around stress and loss and the greatest stresses and losses people have to overcome and how they came back from them.
What is stress?
Stress is the biological response we have to a perceived threat. So when our system is under threat, our stress response goes on. We have a sympathetic nervous system and a parasympathetic nervous system. Parasympathetic is your rest and digest. When everything's relaxed and you're not stressed, and your sympathetic nervous system is what goes on when you're under stress. So when adrenaline and cortisol and all your stress hormones flood your body to alert your system, that you are under threat and you need to either fight, flight, or sometimes freeze under the reaction to stress.
